"Knocking upon silence for an answering music" - Bruce Adolph

Painting towards music, rather than "from" music has been on my mind and on my studio walls lately. I've been ever so slowly working on a series of new paintings inspired by music which  doesn't exist ( or is perhaps not yet known). These are created "towards" music - perhaps in the hope that music may somehow come from them...

I'm relying more on chance behavior of pigments, and a certain kind of raw energy which I hope looks like motion, captured. Not so much a s freeze frame but an imprint of a moment in painted action.

the Big Blank canvas....

Its very big and totally empty so far.. But i have plans as you see on the board.

I tell myself and my students to "enjoy the possibility" and "use the anxiety as a catalyst" but a strong cup of tea or maybe a whole pot is needed this morning to get going on this biggie...soon to be interpretations of the second and possibly third movements of Debussy's massive work for orchestra, La Mer

And a little help from my friend...this painted in Cohasset Massachusetts on the shore where I grew up. Will look to this to remember what happens beneath the waves when i get lost working on the biggie.

...more inspiration from from Peter Zumthor "Thinking Architecture"

To a large degree, designing is based on understanding and establishing systems of order. Yet I believe the essential substance of the architecture we seek comes from feeling and insight. Precious moments of intuition result from patient work. With the sudden emergence of an inner image, a new line in a drawing, the whole design changes and is newly formulated in a fraction of a second... the thing I am creating is flooded by a bright new light
