The Art of Painting Music: July – September 2013
Gyulai's work explores the connections between music and the expressive possibilities of paint on canvas. She listens and looks at music as a subject, object, inspiration and–like Diebenkorn–invokes the dynamic tension between the poles of abstraction and representation, while creating substance from the most ephemeral phenomena.
During her de Young residency, Peggy painted large canvases which fuse motion and emotion with sweeping rhythms and seductive color harmonies. Classical, jazz and contemporary music each had a role during five different theme weeks, from well-known classics to a new work for electroacoustic chamber ensemble, composed by violinist Gloria Justen (a world premiere performance). Throughout the month, musical miniatures in the classical tradition of the “etude” will also serve as inspiration for a series of small paintings. Sunday afternoons were the Swing Shift featuring the sounds of classic Big Band dance music.
